What Is a Worm Gearbox?

A Worm Gearbox, also known as a worm gear reducer, uses a worm gear mechanism to reduce rotational speed while increasing torque. The worm, typically made from hardened steel, meshes with a bronze or cast iron worm wheel to deliver efficient power transmission with excellent load-carrying capacity. The angled setup allows the worm to drive the gear, but the gear cannot easily drive the worm—providing a built-in braking or self-locking feature in some configurations. This makes worm gearboxes particularly suitable for lifts, hoists, and other motion control systems.
